What Determines the Compliance Requirements?

Product Type and Intended Use

The product category, intended users, operating environment, and foreseeable use can affect the applicable safety and performance requirements.

Power and Battery System

Mains-powered, low-voltage, rechargeable, and battery-operated products may have different electrical, charging, battery-safety, and transportation requirements.

Wireless Technologies

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, NFC, and other radio technologies may require radio-frequency testing and equipment authorization.

Target Markets

The United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Australia, and other markets have their own regulations, standards, markings, and documentation requirements.

CE, FCC, and RoHS Are Not the Same Thing

CE Marking

CE marking applies to products covered by relevant European Union legislation. The manufacturer is responsible for identifying applicable requirements, completing the appropriate conformity assessment, preparing technical documentation, issuing an EU Declaration of Conformity, and affixing the CE marking.

FCC Equipment Authorization

Radio-frequency devices intended for the United States must follow the appropriate FCC equipment-authorization procedure before they are marketed, imported, or used.

RoHS Compliance

RoHS restricts the use of specified hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment placed on the European Union market.

The Compliance and Certification Workflow

1. Confirm the Product and Target Markets

Define the final product configuration, intended use, wireless functions, power system, target countries, and responsible commercial parties.

2. Identify Applicable Requirements

Work with qualified compliance specialists to determine the relevant regulations, standards, test methods, markings, and documentation.

3. Prepare Samples and Documentation

Provide production-representative samples, specifications, schematics, bills of materials, component information, user instructions, labels, and other required files.

7. Complete and Maintain the Records

Final reports, declarations, certificates, technical documentation, and product markings are organized and retained according to the applicable requirements.
Certification is not always a single event. Changes to components, suppliers, firmware, construction, or intended markets may require additional review or testing.
